Carnifex

It’s 3:15 pm. With two of my best friends, we ready to go to Aarau where take place The Bonecrusher Fest. I have to meet at 5 pm Carnifex for an interview. When we arrive in backstage, I see the members of Carnifex and the other bands of the tour. Martin, the tour manager, asks us with whom we wish to do the interview. I answer him that it belongs rather to them to decide because we don‘t want to impose a choice. Sat in a small room appendix to backstage, it‘s Scott Lewis, founder member and singer of the band, who joins us. After brief presentations my first sentence will be: " I think it’s important to say I’m really stressed and my English will be perhaps a big shit ! ". Yeah, the interview can begin.

Ok ! So, first of all I really want to thank you for your time and for agreeing to take part in this interview ! My first question is: First year you are headliner for the Bonecrusher fest. What does it mean to you ?
What does it mean to headline Bonecrusher ? Hm, yeah, it’s pretty exciting ! You know, we did the first year with The Black Dahlia Murder, then we did the second year with Dying Fetus so to be able to be headliner, it’s kind of, you know… We really thank Marco, from Avocado, our booking agent over here and also on stage and so he’s looking after for us and get’s the best opportunities for us. So, it’s pretty exciting.

Ok ! It’s been almost six months since your new album came out.
Is it six ?
Yeah... I think, now I’ve doubts…
(Scott begins counting months) Five. Haha ! Yeah I was thinking, is it not five ? Haha ! Yes, I guess it goes fast !





What kind of feedback did you get from your fans, from the public ?

It seems to be very good, you know ! Hm, all the fans are really appreciating the new songs. The record is so all good in U.S, so, yeah, seems to be great! You know, we’re happy, hm, you know, it’s our forth records, people are still excited, and it’s been about seven years as a band now so, it’s good to still have interesting people rather than just, you know… People who just follow us for a year and then they don’t care… So, it’s good.

And you, what do you think of the work you’ve accomplished on your album ?
I really think it’s the best one you know. It’s my favorite work so far, we worked so hard on it. I know that with the last record we took to the next level, a lot of people love that record, I like that record… So it’s gonna be hard to have a better record or at least as good.

So, the next one will be shit ?
Haha ! No ! But, it’s gonna be hard ! No, hm, you know, bands can do a good record and the next year another good record, we’re gonna work more hard. We’re actually starting to write the next one. We just take time to have all the things, to have the time to find everything, be sure that we do the best we can do.

And have you decided between an EP or a LP ?
Hm, yeah, I don’t know, probably just full. You know, we take the time.

So, this is not for this year but next ?
Hm, yeah ! 2013.
Ok. But you’ll continue to do shows in Europe ?
Yeah, of course. We’ll be back, hm… I think we’ll play in Switzerland again…
Yes, this summer !
Yeah, right. I think it’s this summer, we’re gonna play with Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth maybe, hm…
Yeah, Suicide Silence…
So yeah, we will be back this summer and probably at the beginning of the next year.

Ok ! You have been tagged as a Deathcore band. Listening to your last album, I would say that you get closer to bands such as The Black Dahlia Murder who plays Melodic Death Metal. Is this choice voluntary ?
Hm, just, you know. Every record is a little bit different. You know I mean, when you’re writing it maybe your influences touched the record for the time or maybe you’re more excited about doing one. You know, for us, we don’t want to write the same things every time. I think it’s boring and I think for most fans. They want to hear, you know… Same band but a little bit different, you know, fresh. So, we just try to do that. You know we try to, you know, when you listen to it you know it’s a Carnifex song but at the same time, you know it’s a new Carnifex song. So maybe another song, another record, hm… You know what I mean ? So, that’s the work we’re trying to do, trying to stay with you know our songs but not the exact thing every time. Do some different sounds.

I know that with your last album, some people were disappointed because they were waiting on something more Deathcore and not Deathmetal.
Ho… Bored for them, haha! I mean, how you write songs and every single person like ? Right ? So, you know I mean we just try to be us and to enjoy the best. And what we think sounds good and… You know, to write a song for every person, we can’t do it, haha !

Yeah you’re right. Let’s talk about your fans. You seem very close to your public. Contrary to many bands, you communicate a lot with your fans, answering their questions personally or asking for their opinion on Twitter or Facebook. Does it mean a lot to you ? Why such a link ?
Because I think, hm... If you think about it, you know, the only reason we can keep touring is because people buy tickets for the shows, or buy t-shirts at shows, or buy a CD, you know, so, you know, I’m not buying fans, they are. You know what I mean, we’re spending the money and we take the time to drive to the shows or whatever it is why we do it. So if they don’t buy a ticket, buy a t-shirt or an album, there’s no way we’ll be able to fly here to do a show or to get money to record we’re doing, you see what I’m saying? So, I mean, as good as music we made as right, it doesn’t matter if nobody’s supporting. You know, you can be the best band in the world, but if nobody can support it, then you can just stay at home. So I mean, because they support us, we’re gonna be able to do the same, we’re just trying to let them know that we appreciate them, that we know they’re there and you know, we actually supporting the real people. Not just, you know, some pictures on page, some name on a record label, you know. The fans are important.



At the moment you have 170 ' 000 fans on facebook, when you will reach more than 500 ' 000 fans, do you objectively think that you will be able to keep such a privileged link with your fans ?
Ho... I mean the best as we can. You know, I mean try, we’ll always try. Sometimes when we’re like here it’s hard, we don’t’ have so much time, we’re travelling in the bus we don’t have it, but we try. Trying is better than other bands which are not going to talk to anybody. So, haha, we just try the best we can. We just try to talk to people as possible it is.
That’s really good.
Yeah ! I think so too ! You know, I remember when I was a teenager I was a big fan of bands and there was no Facebook, no Twitter, not the same things on internet you know, we have, AOL, you know, you remember that? So, to try to contact a band, you couldn’t, it was like a hm… you know it was impossible. So I would love to do like now you know, we just try do what when I was a fan I would like. To be able ask questions direct to the band, that’s great you know, I would love to do that... So, we’re just trying.

That’s really a great thing !
Yeah! I think so too ! It’s what we’re trying to do !

Hm… A few years ago, you made an excellent cover of Slayer. Is this kind of project once again possible ?
Yeah, we might! We actually talking about doing a cover but now we’re really try to focus on the writing stuff, you know, we cannot say a this time, cause we’re working on the next stuff. But we will do something.

And a split is possible with a band such as All Shall Perish or The Black Dahlia Murder ?
I would love to but the way we work is the record label you know and our record label doesn’t want us to do something with anybody.
Victory Record ?
Yeah. So, a split, unfortunately not, we cannot do a thing if the record label doesn’t want.
Your contract with Victory Record ends soon, you will not continue to work with them.
No, no, probably not.
Ok. So you go…
Yeah, that’s the plan.
Great news. But do you have an idea of label ?
No, not yet. We’ll see the options.
Ok. So, we’ll see. Hm... Let’s talk about tours. What is the most incredible, bizarre or funny thing that happen to you ?
Incredible ? Hm… Just to be able to tour. That’s just an all! You know getting on a plane, traveling to different venues, hanging out with the other bands on the tours, meeting the fans, wherever we are, US or here, or Australia, or Russia whatever. That’s just everything, that just one thing. That’s an all process.

So, when you were in tour in U.S, bats attacked your vans. Was that not incredible ?
Haha ! Yeah ! Haha ! It’s hard to remember because is so far but yeah, also little things, tiny things make you laugh, you know !

There is more than twenty dates on this tour without any day off. How do you manage it ? Is it not too hard ?
For the day off, it’s pretty normal.

Normal ? You are not tired ?
Yeah, not really but if you have a day off, you don’t make any money. You know what I mean, you don’t do money but you still have the crew, so you have to pay them. You still have the bus, so you have to pay them. You know what I mean? So to have a day of it’s just like, you can have fun but… To not have a day off is better. We work hard as we can and then you go to home and that the pay. And, you know, it’s our job.

But you’re a vocalist. How your body accepts that ?
Yeah, that’s crazy but I’ve got to do it! Otherwise, we can’t take free time, the money is too hard to do it. You know we don’t get that much money so if you take a day off…

That’s hard…. Do you feel a difference between the European and the American public ?
Hm, a little bit, maybe not Europe as an all but some countries in Europe are different, some like England, you know, Spain… You know I really like Germany, they are really supportive, Switzerland is always really good, Belgium has very good friends, and Hungary, Czech, Poland are really supportive too. Some places are not supportive like that. But I don’t think it really matter because with internet, the music is everywhere. I appreciate shows in the U.S, in South America, in Mexico, Russia, Australia, Thailand… You know what I mean ? It’s hard to say what place I prefer! Some places are good, some places not so good !

Haha ! Ok ! And what are your passions, other than music ?
Hm… Yeah, of course, hm… you know…
Cooking ?
Haha, no ! My girlfriend really likes cooking ! Not me so much! I don’t know… I mean yeah, I like painting art.
Like the singer of Converge ?
I have never seen his works… Maybe if you show me it I will recognize. So yeah, I like painting, I try to stay always active, and yeah I really like to be in a band and to be in a band, especially like ours, you’re always busy. It takes a lot of time, really… So we don’t have so much time to focus on the other things.



Ok. Now, does your band allow you to live or do you still have to accumulate small jobs between the tours ?
Barely, but yeah, barely. It’s hard !

I know that you were a member of several small bands before Carnifex. Can we hope to listen to some songs of those bands one day ? So we’ll be able to hear the progress you made ?
Hoooo… You know when I was in the other bands there was no internet… Hm… You know what I mean ? The only time was the last band in I was before Carnifex, there was hm… You know MP3 - - - ? You know that ?
Haha, no…
Haha, yeah it was like, hm, kind of like you know myspace and there was all the music so you can do a little page for your band. And then you can upload some MP3, I think from my last bands it’s the only things that existed. The other, that was never on the internet… Hm… I really have to look if it still exists! But I’m not sure it’s still there.

Haha ! So, ok, we will never see your progress !
Or you don’t want to !
Haha ! The band I was it just before Carnifex, it’s actually ok ! But, yeah, that was like maybe 2000, 1999, I think that was the beginning of sites for little bands on internet !

Haha ! Hm, you talked about your girlfriend before. You are often on tour. How do you stay in touch with your family, your girlfriend ? How difficult is it to keep solid links with your close ones ?
We’re always on tour ! It’s hard ! But you know, when you’re with the right person you make it work. I’ve been with her for five years. It really works. We trust each other and we are here for each other as much as we can. But you have to be with the right person. It’s the most important thing.

Just a flimsy question before my last. People often think that Switzerland is chocolate, cheese and clocks. They also think that we are all very rich. If I tell you that for me, the United States are Mac'donalds, David Hasselhoff, really bad politics and the World Wrestling Federation, what will you tell me ?
Haha! I think there is more Mac’donalds in Europe than in U.S. ! David Hasselhoff ? I don’t know this guy… Politics yeah, it’s really bad. Sport, you know in U.S. it’s more football, baseball… But where I live the most important thing is the beach. It’s always warm ! Even now ! The weather is great, today I think 25°, always between 20-30° ! We only see the snow when we’re on tour! Not even rain in San Diego, only ten days rain per year.

God, that’s great ! I think we’re gonna all move there !
Haha ! Yeah !

Last thing ! If you had a message to give to your fans, what would it be ?
You know, just thank you to supporting us ! We just try to give our best to the music and we’re always happy to meet them when we perform !

After the interview, we stayed a short time with Scott and Cory, one of the guitarists, before we left . The show was really great and Carnifex keeps increasing its stake in shows ! I’m really exciting to see them this summer at the Extreme Fest, in Z7, with other bands like Cannibal Corpse or Nasum. So, first interview, one of my favorite band and a sweet memory at the same time ! What more can you ask for ?!
