rose Hi ! Who are you ? What would you like to tell us about THE LEGACY as an
introduction ?

Hi, this is Andy and I play drums in THE LEGACY. THE LEGACY are a melodic hardcore band from the UK that started back in summer 2002. We’ve released 3 EP’s and 1 full length album and done a shit load of tours with the likes of COMEBACK KID, MODERN LIFE IS WAR, YOUR DEMISE, GOLD KIDS, ANOTHER BREATH, KILLING THE DREAM, LIFE LONG TRAGEDY etc.

How would you describe yourselves, as a band and as individuals ?
We’re just 5 regular guys, there’s nothing special about us, we work/go to university, the same as everyone else really.

As mentioned on your Myspace page, you come from different towns of South England, including Brighton. I went there 5 years ago to improve my then very poor English. I remember that Brighton was, and still is I suppose, a very welcoming town, especially for marginalised minorities like gays and vegetarians. Do you think that this characteristic peculiar to Brighton has influenced the band in a way ?
Well I come from Sheffield which is 4 hours north of Brighton, Adam, Dick & Joey just moved there in May 07 and our new(ish) guitarist Steve is from Watford (just outside London). I cant say that it has influenced the band in anyway at all except we never practise now haha!

You’re now part of the Visible Noise roster, after having released the very first record on Dead and Gone Records, almost five years ago. Musicwise, THE LEGACY seems to be a little a bit out of step on the « new » label, since Visible Noise Records mostly signs more metal influenced acts. But well, my assumption might be wrong…What pushed you to sign on Visible Noise ? Is there a particular reason ?
Well not including the back catalogue the only metal band on the label now is BRING ME THE HORIZON. I might be wrong, I think we were one of the first hardcore bands to sign to VN and since then they have signed YOUR DEMISE, THE PLIGHT, OUTCRY COLLECTIVE, BRIDES etc. There wasn’t any particular reason to sign with them. We’d recorded ‘Solitude’ without a label and were looking to find one to release it. We’d played a show in London a few months before and someone from Visible Noise had seen us and approached us about working together.

You were supposed to go on tour recently, along with KILLING THE DREAM and
THE CARRIER, but it didn’t happen. What made this impossible to do ?

I’d rather not go into that if you don’t mind. It was a person matter that affected one of our members.

I’ve heard so many times people claiming that they would be nothing without hardcore or music and that they could’t live without it. Is that your case ? I know that there could be a million reasons to play in a band, some do it for fame or some sort of social gratitude, others do it because it’s pure entertainment, but in some of your lyrics, like in the song « Black Ice », it gives a clear indication that this means a bit more to you, doesn’t it ? If I’m wrong, could you please explain what’s the motive for doing this ?
I love playing drums in a band, especially a hardcore band. There’s nothing better than playing a good show, seeing kids go off, singing your songs and stage diving! It’s the best feeling in the world. Because of this band we’ve got to tour Europe 8 times (I think?) and see so many different places and meet some many awesome people.

The latest record got released last year and it’s called « Beyond Hurt, Beyond Hell ». So, first of all, what is there beyond hurt and hell ?
Adam came up with the title so I’d need to ask him haha.

Apparently, this record’s a bit darker than « Solitude », as I think the latter had this slight feeling of hope going on over the record, even though most lyrics already dealt with loneliness and despair, among other topics. But I definitely feel « Beyond Hurt, Beyond Hell » has an aftertaste of desillusions. How come ?
Again Adam writes all the lyrics so I’m not the best person to speak about them. I guess as we all get older our opinions change on different aspects of our lives. We may not feel the same way we did 3 years ago about certain things that have happened or are happening to us. I don’t want to get too into it because I don’t want to say something Adam might not agree with about his lyrics haha.

Ryan Patterson is the guy behind the artwork of « Beyond Hurt, Beyond Hell ». Why did you choose him ? I think the drawings totally fit to the lyrical content. However, the whole artwork is filled with symbols, which is a brand new thing for THE LEGACY ! Can you comment upon this ?
Ryan is an awesome guy. I love COLISEUM and the artwork he’s done for them. When we were recording the album we went home one night and all looked through our records to find albums with artwork we liked. We all ended up picking a COLISEUM record, so we checked him out on the web and got in touch with him. We just gave him so colours we liked, the album title and song titles and then left it to him. Even though he was on tour he still managed to do an amazing job. We’d work with him again for sure!

What are some of the consequences or sacrifices you’ve had to make because
of the band ?

We’ve sacrificed having any money. We’re constantly broke from touring. We’ve all had to quit jobs or got fired for touring so much. Its hard to find a job that lets you take 4 months off a year to tour and play shows. You need a job to fund yourself on tour but you cant get one because you go on tour all the time, it’s a catch 22 situation.

What would you say and do to a kid who’d come to you and ask for an autograph ? Do you think it’s OK to idolize people, particularly within the hardcore scene ?
I’d sign it. I stand and talk to them and stuff. I don’t think its right to idolize people but I don’t think theres anything wrong with looking up to people and respecting them for what they do. I’m not saying people do that to me haha, not at all.

When was the last time you were actually scared ? Do you tend to get inspired by this kind of experiences for the whole writing process ?
I cant remember that last time I was really scared… Probably when I was last in Sardinia and Andre from GOLD KIDS was driving me around haha! They drive crazy over there, I’d never want to drive in Sardinia. Most of the time when we write songs it starts with an idea Dick has on guitar, we’ll work on it and jam it out into a full song. So many things inspire us to write music its hard to just pick one thing out.

What is the next step for THE LEGACY ? Have you got high expectations for the future ?
We have no plans what so ever haha. We had the KILLING THE DREAM tour which we had to cancel and now theres nothing. Its getting harder from us to play shows with everyone living in different parts of the country and working jobs. I don’t think the band has all been in the same room since October last year!

One more crucial question : what are your 5 favourite records of all time and
why ?

- COUNT ME OUT – Permanent: The best hardcore record ever in my opinion. A perfect mix of aggression and melody. The lyrics are amazing and the music is just tight old school hardcore but made interesting enough so it isn’t just another shit Youth Crew revival record. THE LEGACY played 5 shows with them on their UK tour in 2003 and it was one of the best times of my life. They were amazing every night and the best dudes ever!

- AFI – Black Sails In The Sunset: This was the first AFI album I bought. I’d heard some songs on a compilation CD and when trying to find an album this had just been released so I bought it. At first I wasn’t sure about it, the whole goth kinda vibe. The songs I’d heard before were off earlier albums so this was a bit of a change. I decided to give it a week and if I didn’t like it I’d take it back. I still own it and still listen to it now!

- FARSIDE – The Monroe Doctrine: This is one of my favourite albums of all time! Doesn’t matter what mood I’m in, what time of day it is, where I am or who I’m with, I can always listen to this album. They are amazing musicians and the vocals are incredible! The production is really good. Apart from a random deathmetal song right in the middle of the album this is perfection!

- NEW FOUND GLORY – Sticks & Stones: The perfect summer sound track! Every song is uplifting and filled with great hooks and melodies. I’ve seen these guys live a bunch of times and they are always killer. Looking forward to the new album.

- DAG NASTY – Can I Say: DAG NASTY were one of the first hardcore bands I got into. Adam gave me a tape with loads of songs on it and DAG NASTY really stood out to me. It was fast, aggressive, passionate and full of melody. Almost every song on here is great. We used to cover “Can I Say” in THE LEGACY. No one ever really knew but we didn’t care, we enjoyed playing so who cares haha.

Thank you for having taken the time to answer this bunch of questions ! Anything to add ?
Thanks very much for the interview, hope my answers are ok. Everyone should go check out: SHIP TO SHORE, YOUR DEMISE, MORE THAN LIFE, GOLD KIDS, DEAD SWANS, FAST POINT, Anchors Aweigh Records and Broken Night Records, all awesome people that deserve your attention! Check our Myspace for updates!
Thanks, Andy
